“How much paint for a 1 BHK?” does not have one honest answer. A 1 BHK describes the layout, not the length, height, openings or wall condition. This worksheet shows how to measure two sample rooms and then add the other spaces in your flat.
Measure the walls you will actually paint
- Measure each room's length, width and wall height in feet. Measure to the paintable top edge if there is a false ceiling.
- Measure doors and windows in square feet: width × height. Add their areas for each room.
- Record the kitchen, bathroom and passage separately if those walls are part of the job. Mark tiled areas and cupboards that the painter will not coat.
- Choose a coat count and copy the coverage per litre per coat from the product you plan to use. Different surfaces and paints can change real coverage.
For a rectangular room, paintable wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height − openings. This assumes four full rectangular walls. An L-shaped room or partial tiled wall needs separate measurements.
A worked example: two rooms, not a whole-flat promise
| Room | Dimensions | Openings | Paintable wall area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | 12 × 10 × 9 | 40 sq ft | 356 sq ft |
| Bedroom | 10 × 10 × 9 | 36 sq ft | 324 sq ft |
| Combined | Two rooms | 76 sq ft | 680 sq ft |
At two coats, the painted area is 680 × 2 = 1,360 sq ft. Using an example coverage of 100 sq ft per litre per coat gives 13.6 L. Adding a 10% planning allowance gives 14.96 L; rounded up, that is 15 L. A combination of 10 L + 4 L + 1 L reaches exactly 15 L if those pack sizes are offered for your chosen product. This quantity covers only the two rooms in the table. Add your kitchen, bathroom, passage and ceiling if they are included in your job.
Turn litres into a budget
Use the quote from your local shop, not a website's default price. For illustration only, 15 L at ₹350/L would be ₹5,250 in paint. If a painter quoted ₹12 per sq ft of wall area, 680 sq ft would be ₹8,160 in labour, making ₹13,410 before primer, putty, repairs, ceiling work, taxes and any other charged items. A real quote may calculate labour differently, include paint, or charge extra for surface preparation. Ask what the quoted rate covers.
In the RangVault paint calculator, add each room and enter your local rates. Its litre range helps show how a different coverage assumption changes the answer. Turn ceiling, primer and putty on only if those are part of the job. Save or copy the resulting brief and compare it with the painter's written quotation.
Before ordering the tins
- Confirm the finish, exact manufacturer shade code and number of coats on the product you will buy. A screen HEX value is not a brand shade code.
- Ask whether the wall needs repairs, primer or putty. These change both material and labour.
- Check the actual pack sizes and price per pack. A suggested combination may not be sold in your chosen finish.
- Test a physical sample in morning and evening light, then agree on the shade in writing.
