Estimate paint before you buy

Measure each wall using the room length, width and wall height. Enter the total area of doors and windows to subtract, then select the number of coats. Change coverage to match your paint tin. RangVault adds 10% and rounds litres up, then suggests tins. For example, a 12 × 10 ft room with 9 ft walls and 40 sq ft of openings has 356 sq ft of walls; at two coats and 100 sq ft/L it needs 8 L after the 10% allowance. Set your own prices to compare paint and labour costs. Primer and putty remain optional.

Example prices only: ₹350/L and ₹12/sq ft are sample inputs, not current market prices. Replace with your local quote. 100 sq ft per litre per coat is an editable example. Use the coverage on your paint tin. Painter rate is applied once to wall area; confirm what your quote includes.

Primer and putty coverage and prices are editable examples. Check the actual product pack and required coats.

How we calculate

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height − doors/windows, summed across rooms. Area across coats = painted area × coats. Paint litres = area across coats ÷ your coverage, then 10% extra and rounded up. We use whole litres to suggest common 1 L, 4 L, 10 L and 20 L tins. Ceiling is length × width per room when selected. Primer and putty use their own editable coverage and prices.

This is a planning estimate. Ceiling, primer and putty are off by default. Repairs, tax, delivery, surface preparation and extra materials are excluded.

Colour code is a digital HEX reference, not a paint brand shade code. Match a physical swatch before buying.

Paint calculator questions

Answers for planning, not product instructions. Check the tin and ask your painter about your walls.

How much paint do I need for a 1 BHK, 2 BHK or 3 BHK?

A BHK label cannot tell you the wall area. Measure each room's length, width and height, subtract doors and windows, then enter the number of coats and the actual product's coverage. Use Add another room to total your home.

How many square feet does 1 litre of emulsion cover?

It varies widely by brand, product, coat, wall texture and application method. Check the coverage printed on your selected tin or technical sheet. The 90–120 sq ft per litre per coat range shown here is only an illustrative calculation, not a promise for any product.

Do I need primer before painting?

Primer may be needed on new, repaired, stained or unevenly absorbent surfaces, or when the paint system specifies it. Ask your painter to inspect the wall and follow the product maker's preparation instructions. The calculator leaves primer off until you select it.

Do I need wall putty?

Putty can help smooth minor imperfections before priming and painting, but the amount and number of coats depend on the wall's condition and product. It does not repair an active leak. Include it only after checking with your painter.

How many coats of paint are needed?

Two finish coats are common for many interior painting systems, but some jobs need a different sequence or more coats. A large colour change, surface condition and the manufacturer's instructions can change the plan. Choose one, two or three coats in the calculator.

How much does painting cost per square foot in India?

There is no single reliable India-wide rate. City, wall preparation, brand, finish, coats and whether material is included all affect a quote. Enter the per-square-foot labour rate and paint price from your local painter and shop; the displayed default values are examples only.

When is the best time to paint a house in India?

A dry period often makes planning and drying easier. During monsoon or high humidity, drying can take longer and exterior surfaces may be exposed to rain. Follow the paint maker's temperature, moisture and recoat instructions rather than a fixed calendar date.

Which paint is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?

Ask for a washable finish and a product specified for the surface and moisture conditions. Keep ventilation working, and fix leaks or damp walls before painting. Wet areas may need materials other than ordinary wall paint.

Can I paint a rented flat?

Check your rental agreement and ask the owner before making a permanent change. If painting is not allowed, try removable decor, curtains, bedding or a rug. RangVault's colour planner includes a keep-existing-walls option.
